Talks to sign Deportivo defender at an 'advanced stage'

Newcastle United have confirmed talks to sign Fabricio Coloccini are at an 'advanced stage'. Reports in Spain have claimed that the Magpies have already agreed a deal to bring in the Deportivo La Coruna defender. Coloccini is looking to leave Depor and had threatened to invoke Article 17 in Fifa's regulations in order to walk out on the Galician club. The comments from the Argentina international's agent came after Depor had rejected an initial offer from the Magpies, believed to be in the region of £9.5million.

Ongoing

However, it now appears that the versatile stopper will be on his way to St James' Park in the coming days. A club spokesman confirmed to Sky Sports News that, while a deal had not yet been completed, talks were continuing and are making positive progress. Speaking after Newcastle's friendly defeat to Hertha Berlin on Friday, manager Kevin Keegan admitted a new signing was imminent. Keegan told nufcTV: "There's one deal which is ongoing at the moment. "Hopefully we'll have something to tell you over the weekend."
