On-loan midfielder goes under the knife

Newcastle's on-loan midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez has undergone an operation on a troublesome Achilles injury. As a result, the Uruguay international is now facing up to the prospect of spending four months on the sidelines. Having only signed a season-long deal with the Magpies when he arrived from Valencia over the summer, his career on Tyneside appears to be all but over. He joined the Premier League outfit on transfer deadline day in a convoluted agreement which also involved French side Monaco, where he had previously been on loan. However, he has struggled to adapt to life in England, appearing to lack the requisite match fitness to be a success at St James' Park. Restricted to just 38 minutes of uneventful top flight action this season it now looks almost certain that he will be heading back to Spain next summer once his contract comes to an end.
