Newcastle accept offer for long-serving keeper

Sky Sports News understands Shay Given is having a medical at Manchester City after a fee was agreed with Newcastle United. The Magpies gave the goalkeeper permission to discuss a move to City on Friday after he expressed a wish to leave St James' Park. Joe Kinnear conceded last week that he was resigned to losing Given, but branded City's £5million offer as 'derisory' and an 'insult'. A fee is now understood to have been agreed between the two clubs ahead of the close of the transfer window on Monday. Given, who missed the midweek defeat by City due to injury, is now undergoing a medical with Mark Hughes' side as his long service for Newcastle appears to be drawing to a close. The Republic of Ireland international joined the Magpies in 1997 from Blackburn Rovers and he has made over 450 appearances for the club. However, he revealed after the 5-1 defeat at home by Liverpool over Christmas that he was considering his future on Tyneside due to Newcastle's failure to challenge for honours. He was also linked with North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, but now appears set to join City, with Hughes having been keen to bring in an experienced keeper.
