Williamson expects team-mates to respond positively

Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson has backed his team-mates to bounce back from their surprise weekend defeat to Blackpool. The Magpies entered the match as favourites and brimming with confidence after a three-game unbeaten run that included a 6-0 win over Aston Villa. However, Blackpool upset the odds and forged ahead through Charlie Adam's penalty before DJ Campbell's fine late second finally ended Newcastle's resistance. The defeat ended the club's lengthy unbeaten home record, although Williamson is staying positive and is expecting Chris Hughton's side to respond in the right manner.

Opportunity lost

"We know that we're going to lose games this season, more than we did last year, and the boys look at this one as a massive opportunity lost," he told The Journal. "We knew there were going to be more defeats along the road and we're going to play a lot worse than we did against Blackpool, but it's all about keeping the confidence up. "We've got a good group of lads here and that's what's going to happen. When we had adversity last season, we bounced back straight away and that's what the manager has said in the dressing room. "It's not about the defeat, it's how we react to it. It's down to the players to kick on from this. We have to come out next weekend and show it hasn't affected us. "I don't think there's anger there, just disappointment. Players will be tough on themselves, but as a team we know that everybody worked hard and nobody threw the towel in."
