Last-gasp goal hero puts points before personal glory

Newcastle hero Fabricio Coloccini claims he would swap his late equaliser against Wigan in return for three points. The Argentine defender popped up with a stoppage-time header to complete a two-goal comeback in a 2-2 draw at St James' Park on Saturday. Coloccini, 28, was far from jubilant, though, claiming the Magpies cannot afford to keep dropping points at home to relegation rivals. "We can't really be losing two points here," claimed the former AC Milan centre-half. "We have to win the games at home, and we were playing against a team who may be competing with us at the end of the season. "I am happy with the point and my goal - but I would be happier if I had not scored and we had got all three points."

Improvement

Following recent home defeats to Blackpool and Stoke, the point against the Latics can be seen as something of an improvement, particularly having found themselves two goals down at half-time. FormerMagpies winger Charles N'Zogbia netted a spectacular two-minute brace before Shola Ameobi got the hosts back into the game midway through the second period. Ameobi admits Newcastle did not play particularly well, but with their fighting spirit never waning he felt they were always in with a shout. He said: "Few people would have thought we would get anything out of this game after half-time, but we believe. "We are not always going to play well, but you have got to have that belief, and I certainly have that and the team has that. "Regardless of what is going on and what the scenarios are, you have got to keep on fighting to the end, and sometimes things like that happen."
