Nigeria coach Shaibu Amodu says his country is trying to persuade Nedum Onuoha to play for them.

Former England under-21 star could switch nationalities

Nigeria coach Shaibu Amodu will try to persuade Nedum Onuoha to represent his team at international level. The Manchester City defender played for the England Under-21 side at this year's European championship but has not yet won a full cap for the senior side. Onuoha has dual nationality and is eligible to represent Nigeria after a Fifa vote in June removed the age limit on changing national teams. He was initially approached by the country of his birth in 2007 but turned the offer down. However, Amodu revealed that Nigeria will be launching a new initiative to recruit players with roots in the country to play for their national side. "We have sent word to Nedum to see if he will be interested," he said. "We will get new players but first we have to qualify (for the World Cup finals)." Another potential target is Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi, who was also born in Nigeria and has represented England at Under-21 level.
