Middlesbrough moved up to second in the Sky Bet Championship, while Nottingham Forest earned a first win in five games.

Boro were superior to Bolton at the Riverside but only had George Saville's 34th-minute goal to show for their efforts until Britt Assombalonga scored a late second to seal a 2-0 win.

The result takes Tony Pulis's side to within a point of Leeds, who were convincing 3-0 winners over Preston during Tuesday's schedule.

Nottingham Forest ended their dismal record against Sheffield Wednesday with a 2-1 victory at the City Ground.

The Owls had beaten Forest in their last seven league meetings but Lewis Grabban glanced in a 41st-minute free-kick before Joao Carvalho curled in a second for Forest with 63 minutes gone.

Steven Fletcher's deflected 88th-minute shot boosted hopes of another comeback after Wednesday snatched a point against Stoke at the weekend but it proved to be just a consolation.

At the other end of the table, two goals in three minutes gave QPR a third win in their last four league matches as they defeated Millwall 2-0.

QPR 2-0 Millwall

They had a helping hand this time from Ben Amos, who was arguably culpable for both goals as Massimo Luongo headed in a 30th-minute opener before Ebere Eze bundled a shot beyond the Millwall keeper.

Reading suffered a fourth home defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to Norwich.

Teemu Pukki's fifth goal of the campaign in the 14th minute put the Canaries ahead. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson levelled things in the 72nd minute but Norwich went straight down the other end where Mario Vrancic produced a neat finish.

Birmingham remain winless but were unlucky in a goalless draw against Sheffield United, who climb back to sixth.

The hosts struggled to break Blues down despite having the better of the contest before the break but Garry Monk's side spurned several late chances as Gary Gardner hit a post with a free-kick and Omar Bogle fluffed his lines at the back post.
