Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst is interested in the Sunderland manager's job, Sky sources understand.
Simon Grayson was sacked after the 3-3 Sky Bet Championship draw with Bolton on Tuesday night as their dreadful run of form at the Stadium of Light continued.
Sunderland have not won at home since December 2016 and with the club in the drop zone, two points adrift of safety, Grayson was sacked.
Shrewsbury have flourished under Hurst's guidance and are top of Sky Bet League One having won 11 of their opening 16 games.
Meanwhile, Grayson has spoken of his disappointment at being sacked by Sunderland but wished the club well in their battle to avoid back-to-back relegations.
"I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to the club and all the fans, players and staff at the club's training ground and the Stadium of Light," he said in a statement issued via the League Managers Association.
"Sunderland AFC is a huge football club and whilst I am very disappointed not to be continuing as its manager, I hope that the club will stabilise and return the success and first-class football that the supporters and people of Sunderland deserve.
"I would like to wish everyone associated with Sunderland AFC all the very best for the future."
Billy McKinlay and Robbie Stockdale will jointly take caretaker charge of Sunderland for the Tees-Wear derby against Middlesbrough at the Riverside on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.
Former Boro boss Aitor Karanka is one of the frontrunners to take over from Grayson, with Peter Reid, Stefan Schwartz and Peter Reid among those also in contention according to the bookmakers.
