Derby to keep Dyer

Trialist Lloyd Dyer looks set to stay at Derby County until the end of the season.

The Rams used Tuesday's friendly against Mansfield Town to test out several potential players, and Dyer proved the most successful of the bunch.

He began the game at left back, but moved into a left-midfield role in the second half.

Despite missing three good chances in the 3-1 defeat to The Stags, caretaker manager Terry Westley has decided to keep the player training with the team until the end of the season.

Westley said on the Derby County website: "Dyer has done well in training and is better playing wide on the left, where he wants to play, rather than at left back.

"It is a position that at the end of the season the club will need to fill as there is only really Lee Holmes under contract here."

Six-foot seven-inch Nigerian striker Evangelino Valentim and 23-year-old Frenchman Youness Bengellou also played, but both failed to impress.

Westley said of Bengellou: "We played him at right back where he has played for PSG, but he is not quite what we're looking for to take us forward."

Seth and Michael Johnson continued their respective recoveries from knee injuries by playing and Derby also took a look at 18-year-old Charlton Athletic striker James Walker.

The game against Mansfield was decided by three first half goals and a Holmes penalty midway through the second half proved too little too late for The Rams.
