Defender puts pen-to-paper on new contract

Skysports.com understands Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross has signed a new deal at the Britannia Stadium. Stoke revealed last week that they were close to agreeing a new long-term contract with the highly-rated defender and now Shawcross has put pen-to-paper. Shawcross has signed a new four-and-a-half year deal to keep him at Stoke until 2014. The England Under 21 international has established himself as one of the most promising players in the Premier League and he is a key member of Tony Pulis' squad. The likes of Manchester United and Liverpool have been strongly linked with the powerful defender after catching the eye at Stoke over the last 18 months. Stoke have moved to ward off the interest by securing Shawcross on a long-term deal. News of Shawcross' new contract will come as a massive boost to Stoke as they look to maintain their progress and consolidate themselves as an established Premier League side.
