Colchester striker Marvin Sordell has undergone surgery on his injured ankle and may not feature again this season.

The 25-year-old former Watford, Bolton and Burnley forward has not played for the U's since the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Tottenham on January 30.

Following Monday's operation, Sordell, who joined the Sky Bet League One strugglers in September, will now begin his rehabilitation, but the Essex club accept "it looks like it will be a race against time for him to play again this season".

Colchester physio Tony Flynn added on the club's official website: "Marvin has had a small spur of bone removed from the outside of his ankle, something that initially wasn't troubling him enough to miss games and training.

"It got steadily worse and unfortunately we got to the stage where going in for surgery was required.

"He will spend the first couple of weeks at home recovering from the operation and then we'll have him back at the training ground with us."
