Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Lucas Joao is the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month winner for December, receiving 55 per cent of the public vote.

Joao had one thing in mind - against Blackburn on December 1 - when he received the ball. One touch positioned it in front of him, the second launched a 25-yard shot so ferocious it was still rising as it struck the net.

Joao said: "Thank you to everyone that voted for me. I'm happy to have scored such a great goal, to help the team and to win this award for the club.

"It's nice that Sheffield Wednesday have won this award three times this season, especially at a time when we aren't performing as well as we'd like. It means a lot to us.

"This also recognises the quality we have in the team. I have to admit that I think Adam Reach's goal (for his award) was better than mine.

"I've been pleased with my season personally and being able to score goals. However, I would swap my personal good season for us doing better as a team. But we have a new manager in place now and a good chance to improve and move up the table."

Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman said: "It's fair to say that Sheffield Wednesday fans haven't had the best of seasons so far, but they've definitely had more than their fair share of outstanding goals.

"This rising drive from Lucas Joao that thudded in off the crossbar was comparable to any of Adam Reach's early season screamers."

Joao beat off competition from Stoke City's Tom Ince and Birmingham City's Omar Bogle.

Barnsley striker Cauley Woodrow is the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month winner for December, receiving 55 per cent of the public vote.

There was something eerily deliberate about Woodrow's goal. Every step appeared to be planned from the drift inside from the wing to the imperiously struck shot into the far corner.

Woodrow said: "It is nice to be rewarded for scoring a nice goal and is extra special as I've not won anything like this before. It all happened so quickly in the build-up, but I remember cutting inside from the left and hearing the crowd shout 'shoot', so I thought 'why not' and thankfully it went in.

"I knew as soon as it left my foot that it was in and it was extra special because all my family had come up from London to watch the game. So to celebrate with them and also help give the Barnsley fans a good victory was special."

Goodman said: "Barnsley absolutely dominated Peterborough in this 2-0 win which moved them above their opponents into fifth in League One. Woodrow's piledriver secured the win in some style, flying into the top corner from 30 yards."

Woodrow beat off competition from Doncaster Rovers' John Marquis and Plymouth's David Fox.

Sky Bet League Two: Wes Thomas - Port Vale v GRIMSBY TOWN - December 26

Wes Thomas of Grimsby Town recieves the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month award for December - Mandatory by-line: Robbie Stephenson/JMP - 17/01/2019

Grimsby Town striker Wes Thomas is the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month winner for December, receiving 45 per cent of the public vote.

The sign of a striker in form is that he knows what he is going to do before anyone else on the pitch. To be precise, a jink inside and an arrowhead of a shot into the far top corner.

Thomas said: "I've never won this one so it is nice to hear. I am really grateful that the fans have voted for me and it is a real honour to receive the award. It's obviously right up there in terms of the best goals of my career."

Goodman said: "This was a Boxing Day gift for the Grimsby faithful, with an outstanding strike securing all three points for the Mariners.

"Thomas was always looking to get back onto his stronger right foot, but he still had a huge amount to do when hitting the dipping drive inside the far post."

Thomas beat off competition from Forest Green's George Williams and Yeovil Town's Yoann Arquin.
