Huddersfield have approached Barnsley to speak to their assistant head coach Andreas Winkler, Sky sources understand.

New Terriers boss Jan Siewert succeeded David Wagner on Monday and wants German compatriot Winkler, who he worked with in Germany at RW Essen, to become his assistant head coach.

Huddersfield are currently bottom of the Premier League, 10 points adrift of 17th-placed Newcastle as they look to avoid relegation to the Sky Bet Championship for the second consecutive season.

On Monday, Huddersfield chairman Dean Hoyle revealed Siewert was pinpointed over two years ago while working with German side Bochum, and that Huddersfield kept in touch with him ever since.

Hoyle said: "When David let us know he intended to step aside at the end of the season, we quickly moved to meet Jan; his name was still at the top of our list of possible successors."
