Midfielder Brown had played only a late cameo role in last month's home win against Birmingham City before making his first league start of the season at the weekend.
Pugh, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, made his first appearance for Leeds in over a year and although four-goal Ross McCormack stole the show, McDermott also hailed Brown and Pugh.
"I was proud of him (McCormack), Michael Brown, Danny Pugh, the lads at the back...Paddy Kenny made two match-winning saves in my opinion," said McDermott after his side's 4-2 win.
"Danny Pugh hadn't started a game all season and comes in and does that.
"Charlton played some decent stuff at times - you expect to be under pressure away from home. They hadn't conceded in a couple. I thought it was a fantastic performance."
McDermott was also complimentary about referee Keith Stroud, who delayed kick-off by half an hour after two inspections to allow a rain-sodden Valley pitch to dry.
"I have to be honest and I wasn't convinced we would play when we got to the ground," McDermott added. "I'd watched the rain come down here since Friday and I was concerned.
"But the referee showed great calmness and patience before the game and he deserves credit for making the right decision in the end."
