The interim chairwoman of the English Football League (EFL) says female coaches are as "tactically adept" as their male counterparts, and should be taking significant roles in the men's game.

Debbie Jevans, a former professional tennis player who played a key role in the organisation of the London 2012 Olympics and the 2015 Rugby World Cup, says she wants to see more women coaches being employed by men's teams.

Jevans believes the process of seeing more female coaches could be a "slow burn", but other roles in football, such as physio, shows it can be done.

In National Inclusion Week, the director of Inclusive Employers says sport is "the greatest way" to break through boundaries - but there is plenty of work to do.

"Gradually women are getting into coaching and I would love to get to the point where we have more females in the men's game," Jevans told The Times.

"Why not? They are as tactically adept as men, they can read the game as well as men, look at women's football and some of the coaches in that.

"It will be a slow burn for sure but a number of physios now are female and that never used to happen."

Jevans also cited Andy Murray's former coach Amelie Mauresmo, who helped the Scot to seven titles during the two years they worked together.

"It always amused me when Andy Murray got Amélie Mauresmo to be his coach, and I remember reading someone saying she can't possibly go into the changing room. No one made that comment when all those women had male coaches," said Jevans.
