Hereford striker Steve Guinan grabbed a hat-trick as Oldham's promotion bid was halted by an emphatic victory by Graham Turner's side who eased their own relegation worries with a 5-0 win at Edgar Street.
Oldham veteran-newcomer Dean Windass hit the Hereford post early on but the Bulls attacking style kept the Latics on the back-foot.
Guinan opened the scoring early on after he was able to get his head on to a long throw-in from Matt Done before he doubled the advantage when he was put clear by Lionel Ainsworth and placed the ball past Oldham goalkeeper Greg Fleming.
Ainsworth then then collected a goal of his own when he blasted the ball into the roof of the net after Guinan's header had struck the crossbar.
The Hereford striker though was not to be denied a second time and Guinan completed his first-half treble with another neat finish from inside the six-yard box after he combined well with Ainsworth.
Ainsworth claimed Hereford's fifth midway through the second half when he side-footed the ball past goalkeeper Fleming after dispossessing Kelvin Lomax at the edge of the penalty box.
