Pools progress but Dale, Walsall and Oldham bow out

Hartlepool hit Northampton with a second-half blitz to ease into the next round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday night. There were no goals in the first half of the northern section first round tie after Northampton made the long trip up to Victoria Park. But then the game exploded into life as Hartlepool struck four goals in nine minutes, with Evan Horwood, Antony Sweeney, Andy Monkhouse and substitute Denis Behan scoring to claim a 4-0 win. Accrington went through on penalties at Tranmere after the game finished 1-1 at Prenton Park. Enoch Showunmi levelled after Ray Putterill opened the scoring for Stanley, but Showunmi was the only man to miss as the visitors prevailed 5-3 in the shoot-out.

Port Vale knocked out Rochdale with a 2-1 win at home to the newly-promoted League One outfit. Marc Richards and strike partner Justin Richards scored either side of the break for Vale before Matt Done's goal set up a tense finish. First-half goals by Jordan Bowery and Dean Morgan gave Chesterfield a 2-1 win at Walsall, for whom Reuben Reid equalised. Shrewsbury also dumped out League One opposition as Steve Leslie's late strike gave the unbeaten Shrews a 1-0 victory at Oldham. Rotherham claimed a 1-0 home win against Lincoln thanks to Adam Le Fondre's sixth of the season just after the break. A 42nd-minute strike by 18-year-old striker Vinny Mukendi gave Macclesfield a 1-0 triumph at home to Morecambe.
