Manchester City U21s dispatched Crewe 4-1 in the Checkatrade Trophy to move top of Northern Group D.

Man City led from the second minute when Tom Dele-Bashiru bundled home, and they made it two when Lorenzo Gonzalez finished off a rapid counter-attack.

Alex Nicholls halved the lead when he pulled a goal back five minutes after the interval, but any hope of an equaliser was extinguished when Corey Whelan gave away a penalty, and Taylor Richards finished confidently.

In the final minute, Henri Ogunby made it four, firing high into the net after a corner.

Everton U21s kicked off their campaign with a 6-5 penalty shootout defeat against Bradford at Valley Parade.

A frantic last 10 minutes saw the Toffees go ahead when Bassala Sambou fired into the top corner, and five minutes later Everton youngster Antony Evans was sent off for a second bookable offence.

George Miller then levelled for Bradford in the second minute of injury time before netting in the shoot-out - but it was team-mate Eliot Goldthorp who scored the winner to give Bradford a 6-5 spot-kick win.

Newport County upset Chelsea U21s as the League Two side won 3-0 at Rodney Parade.

A double from Jamille Matt put them in full control, with goals either side of half-time, and Bristol City loanee Antoine Semenyo wrapped up the three points in the first minute of injury time.

The result put Newport top of Southern Group C, where three of the four teams involved are level on three points - and Plymouth Argyle are yet to play a game.

Exeter City saw off West Ham U21s 2-0 at St James Park thanks to another double, this time from ex-Notts County forward Jonathan Forte.

He netted his first when finishing off a pull-back from Matt Jay, and doubled the lead when he nodded in Lee Martin's corner.
