Brighton are in talks with Sunderland about signing goalkeeper Jason Steele as a potential back-up to No 1 Mat Ryan, according to Sky sources.
The Seagulls are currently looking at their goalkeeping options with Tim Krul and Niki Maenpaa likely to leave for regular first-team football.
Former England U21 international Steele, who has made more than 250 appearances in the Championship for Sunderland, Blackburn and Middlesbrough, is likely to fill one of the vacancies.
Steele, who was also part of the GB squad for the 2012 London Olympics, is keen to get his career back on track following successive relegations with Blackburn and Sunderland.
He joined Sunderland last summer on a four-year deal for around £500,000 after Rovers went down to League One.
Steele would provide competition for Australia international Ryan, who kept 10 clean sheets as Brighton stayed in the Premier League. Ryan is likely to miss several Premier League matches in January due to Australia's involvement in the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
