Darlington manager Simon Davey has approached former club Barnsley regarding a deal for defender O'Neil Thompson.
The Jamaica international was signed for Barnsley by Davey last summer and arrived on a two-year contract from Norwegian side Notodden FK.
However, the 26-year-old has made just two appearances since linking up with the Tykes and has failed to impress Davey's successor Mark Robins.
He featured twice on loan at Burton Albion earlier this year and could now be set for a permanent move away from Oakwell.
Robins confirmed that Darlington, who will be playing in the Blue Square Premier next season, have made an enquiry for Thompson.
"Darlington have made an approach for O'Neil and they want to take him," Robins told the club's official website.
"We will see what develops."
