Partick Thistle have announced former Wigan and Chesterfield boss Gary Caldwell as their new manager, the club confirmed on Monday.

Partick, who were relegated from the Scottish Premiership last season, sacked Alan Archibald on October 6 and are currently eighth in Scotland's second tier, the Scottish Championship, which consists of ten teams.

Caldwell, who played for Celtic and Hibernian before stepping into management, has been without a job since being sacked at Chesterfield in 2017, while he was also in charge of Wigan between 2015 and 2016.

The 36-year-old was unable to save Chesterfield from relegation to Sky Bet League Two but did lead Wigan to the League One title after winning the FA Cup as a player in the 2012/13 season.

Caldwell, who made 55 appearances for Scotland, told Partick's official website: "First and foremost, I am extremely excited to be here.

"There is a huge amount of potential in this squad. But it won't happen overnight. We can't do it on our own either, I need support from the fans and so do the players.

"If we are together, I have no doubt we can achieve a massive amount."
