Las Palmas goalkeeper Javi Varas was left red-faced as he passed the ball Real Sociedad's Xabi Prieto, who then scored the winning goal.

During the La Liga game, the Spanish stopper received a back pass from Sergio Canales before playing the ball out but almost instantly realised that it was the opposing midfielder who was going to pick it up.

But his scramble back to his line was not enough to keep Prieto from firing home from the edge of the box, gifting Sociedad the 74th-minute winner on Friday evening.

It saw the Basque side tighten their grip on fifth place, just one point behind Atletico Madrid ahead of their match with Barcelona on Sunday and five ahead of Villarreal who also host Real Madrid on the same day.

The defeat in Gran Canaria saw Las Palmas lose their fourth La Liga game in a row, but remain in a comfortable mid-table spot - currently occupying 12th place - but face a daunting trip to the Bernabeu live on Sky Sports 2 on Wednesday.
