Southampton defender Wesley Hoedt has joined Spanish club Celta Vigo on loan for the rest of the season.

Hoedt was a regular in Southampton's Premier League squad last season and until the end of November, but he had not featured at all since Ralph Hasenhuttl's arrival as manager.

La Liga strugglers Celta have the option to buy Hoedt when his loan expires in the summer.

Hoedt becomes their second loanee from Southampton as he will join up with former St Mary's team-mate Sofiane Boufal, who is on a season-long deal at the Balaidos.

Saints signed Hoedt from Lazio in the summer of 2017 for a fee in the region of £15m and gave him a five-year deal.

He went on to make 31 appearances in his first season on the south coast with his only goal for the club coming against West Brom in a 2-1 FA Cup victory.

A Southampton statement read: "The move will allow him to gain additional playing time between now and the end of the season, while also further helping [Ralph] Hasenhüttl to achieve his aim of trimming the first-team squad this month.
