Fernandez edges closer to Portuguese capital
Sporting have agreed to sign Chilean midfielder Matias Fernandez from Villarreal for an undisclosed fee.
The announcement was made on the Portuguese outfit's official website on Saturday but details surrounding the switch were not disclosed, although the move will not be complete until the player undergoes a medical.
The 23-year-old struggled to make an impact at Villarreal after his move from Chilean club Colo-Colo in 2007, scoring just seven goals in 86 games at El Madrigal.
The move to the Portuguese capital should provide Fernandez with more first-team opportunities and the club will play UEFA Champions League football next term after finishing runners up to Porto in the league.
