Former player takes over at struggling club

Racing Santander have appointed Alvaro Cervera as their new coach following the sacking of Juan Jose Gonzalez earlier this week, the club have confirmed. Gonzalez departed the Spanish strugglers on Wednesday after just four months at the helm, with Racing third-bottom of the Primera Liga. Cervera's appointment, on a contract until the end of the season, marks his first stab at managing a top-flight club, having joined from second division Recreativo Huelva. "Having negotiated his release from Recreativo Huelva, Racing has finalised an agreement with Alvaro Cervera," a club statement reported. "The new Racing coach's contract will run until June 30." Spaniard Cervera, a former player at Racing, is set for a baptism of fire on Sunday when he takes charge for the first time against Primera Liga giants Barcelona.
