Villarreal crashed out to third tier opposition, costing Juan Carlos Garrido his job, while Atletico Madrid were also on the wrong end of a giant killing. Deportivo La Coruna were reduced to nine men as they bowed out and Malaga left it late to book their safe passage into the last 16. Villarreal were stunned 2-0 at El Madrigal by third division Mirandes, with Munoz Pablo Infante stepping off the bench to bag a brace and hand the minnows a shock 3-0 aggregate success. Atletico Madrid were also undone on home soil, with third tier Albacete picking up a 1-0 win that saw them through 3-1 on aggregate. Real Zaragoza were another top flight casualty, with two goals in the last three minutes of the game seeing Alcoron secure a 3-0 aggregate win. Arouna Kone struck in extra-time as Levante edged out nine-man Deportivo La Coruna 5-4 on aggregate, with a 4-1 win on the night seeing them through. Diego Buonanotte pounced with four minutes remaining to ensure that Malaga avoided extra-time with Almeria, with a 2-2 draw taking them through 3-2 on aggregate. Granada beat Real Sociedad 2-1 but bowed out 5-3 on aggregate, while Osasuna were held 1-1 by Almeria to progress 4-2 over the course of the two legs. Racing Santander went through on away goals after a 4-3 defeat to Rayo Vallecano left them tied 6-6 on aggregate. Away goals also saw Cordoba through after their two-legged tie with Real Betis ended 2-2, while Athletic Bilbao remain in the competition after picking up 1-0 wins at home and away over Oviedo.
