Bayern Munich inflicted more misery on Schalke as they left the Veltins-Arena with a 2-0 victory to cement first place in the Bundesliga.

James Rodriguez and Robert Lewandowski were on target either side of half-time, the Poland striker converting a penalty, to continue the reigning champions' perfect start to the season.

It was the easiest of wins as last season's runners-up Schalke barely fired a shot and would have lost more heavily had Rodriguez not been so wasteful.

Bayern's early ascendancy was rewarded in the eighth minute when Rodriguez headed home a corner by Joshua Kimmich at the near post, capitalising on some poor defending.

Rodriguez made partial amends for his wastefulness when he won a 63rd-minute penalty after being clipped from behind by Mark Uth as he weaved into the area and Lewandowski was accurate from the spot.

Schalke have now lost all four of their league matches.

Hertha Berlin temporarily occupied top spot after their 4-2 home win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

The visitors took the lead through a 28th-minute Thorgan Hazard penalty that was drilled high and straight before Vedad Ibisevic nodded home a superb cross by Marvin Plattenhardt.

Valentino Lazaro's header gave Hertha a lead that was extended when Ibisevic finished a superb run and pass by Salomon Kalou.

Alassane Plea offered Monchengladbach hope as he nodded in a cross, but when Ondrej Duda drilled the ball home from the edge of the area it was all over.

Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw by Hoffenheim in an eventful clash at the Rhein-Neckar Arena.

A defensive blunder by Abdou Diallo allowed the home side to take the lead through the in-form Joelinton and they appeared to have produced a second, only for Ermin Bicakcic's header to be disallowed.

Diallo was then sent off for Dortmund but they rallied, with Christian Pulisic getting the 84th-minute equaliser.

Freiburg ran out convincing 3-1 winners at Wolfsburg to register a first league win of the season.

Roland Sallai (7), Nils Petersen (21) and Mike Frantz (51) had Freiburg 3-0 up before Admir Mehmedi (61) replied on his first start of the campaign.

Davy Klaassen struck the winner with 15 minutes to go as Werder Bremen saw off Augsburg 3-2 at the WWK Arena.

Koo Ja-cheol (45) and Philipp Max (47) replied for the hosts after Max Kruse (34) and Maximilian Eggestein (36) had put Bremen in control, before Klaassen pounced.

Nuremberg registered their maiden win of the season by defeating Hannover 2-0. Waldemar Anton's own goal and a strike by Torles Knoll settled matters inside the last 14 minutes, after the visitors had Miiko Albornoz sent off in the 29th minute.
