Koeman hints at Machlas exit

AJAX coach Ronald Koeman has indicated that unhappy Greek striker Nikos Machlas will leave the club during the winter break.

The 1998 Golden Boot winner has become a fringe figure at the Amsterdam ArenA this term with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mido and Victor Sikora all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Machlas has publicly declared his desire to leave the Dutch giants and Koeman will not stand in the player's way.

"If Nikos says that he wants to leave Ajax, that he doesn't want to go on like this, he has to make sure he reaches a solution with the club," Koeman told Dutch newspaper De Gelderlander.

Both parties will wait until the transfer window re-opens in January when Ajax will listen to offers for the former Vitesse Arnhem star.

Tottenham Hotspur were credited with an interest in the hit-man but the recent capture of Robbie Keane from Leeds means they are unlikely to want another striker.
