Ajax failed to take advantage of PSV's Saturday slip-up as they dropped their first points in five Eredivisie games at home to NEC.
Frank de Boer's men went into the game knowing a win would be enough to take them above their title rivals, who had been held to a 1-1 draw by Heerenveen.
But Christian Santos scored eight minutes from time as NEC twice came back from behind to snatch an unexpected 2-2 draw.
Arkadiusz Milik had opened the scoring for the hosts but their lead lasted just three minutes before Navarone Foor struck a 19th-minute equaliser.
Rens van Eijden's own goal put Ajax back in front and the hosts looked set for top spot before the dramatic late intervention from Santos.
Feyenoord left it late to maintain their push for a Europa League qualifying place with a 2-0 win at Vitesse.
Michiel Kramer broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute and Bital Basacikoglu grabbed his side's second two minutes from time to secure a third straight league win.
Cambuur remain rooted to the bottom of the table after blowing a half-time lead to lose 3-1 at Heracles, who snapped a run of six games without a win.
Jack Byrne looked set to pile more misery on the hosts with a 32nd-minute opener, but second-half strikes from Wout Weghorst, Robin Gosens and Iliass Bel Hassani ultimately eased Heracles to victory.
Utrecht came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Den Haag. Sebastien Haller and Ruud Boymans gave the hosts the lead before Danny Bakker and Mike Havenaar replied.
