We explain how Premier League may lose Champions League spot

After defeats for Chelsea and Arsenal on Tuesday evening, Sky Sports football expert Charlie Nicholas casts his eye over the remaining Premier League interest in Wednesday's Champions League action.

Former Arsenal striker Nicholas doubts United and City's chances, as they go up against German outfits Borussia Monchengladbach and Wolfsburg after both English clubs suffered defeats in their opening Champions League games.

Borussia Monchengladbach v Manchester City (Wednesday, 7.45pm)

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 15: Manuel Pellegrini manager of Manchester City with an injured Vincent Kompany of Manchester City during the UEFA Champ

I don't have any confidence in this City side. Without Vincent Kompany the defence looks like four individuals. Kolarov has never looked like a proper full-back for me and the other guys struggle without their leader.

The German teams are good enough to sit and take what City have got to offer. They still fail to get enough of the ball to (Sergio) Aguero without (David) Silva and defensively they are all over the place, so I think Monchengladbach will get a point.

CHARLIE PREDICTS: 1-1 (6/1 with Sky Bet)

Manchester United v Wolfsburg (Wednesday, 7.45pm)

Anthony Martial earned Van Gaal praise
Image: Anthony Martial could play as the main striker, says Charlie

Manchester United are top of the league but for the life of me I don't know how. I can't pin point a player that has been outstanding other than David De Gea, who has only played three games, and everyone else has just been decent.

In terms of their system for Europe, (Anthony) Martial can play further up and let (Wayne) Rooney drift, which I think is his best position, but Louis van Gaal likes to play two wide men so it will be interesting to see how they set up.

Wolfsburg will give them a real test and I can see them getting something here. I did United before thr Capital One Cup and you can tell the fans are bored and I think they will be again, with the Germans once again getting a result.

CHARLIE PREDICTS: 0-0 (11/1 with Sky Bet)
