Midfielder still doubtful for England friendly

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere remains doubtful for England's friendly against Holland after revealing he is suffering from nothing more than an inflammation of the ankle and should be fit again 'in a few days'. Wilshere picked up the knock in the Gunners' pre-season friendly against New York Red Bulls over the weekend and underwent a scan on Tuesday. It was hoped the procedure would shed some light on whether he would miss England's clashwith Holland next Wednesday, although his participation is still in the balance with no definitive timescale in place for his return. Wilshere announced on his Twitter account: "Ankle scan just showed some inflammation. Hopefully will settle down in a few days." The scan confirms the initial prognosis of the Arsenal medical staff, who informed manager Arsene Wenger that he could expect to be without the 19-year-old for a week. The injury could still put Wilshere out of the Gunners' final pre-season friendly at Benfica on Saturday. Wenger said after Sunday's game that Wilshere would be unavailable for England duty should he fail to recover in time to play in Portugal.
