Sunderland to offer Greek defender a route back to England

Sky Sports understands Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill is closing on a deadline day move for former Liverpool defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos. The powerful Greek centre-half left Anfield in August 2011 to make a fresh start in Germany with Wolfsburg. He has struggled to make an impact in the Bundesliga, though, and has been restricted to just a handful of first-team appearances. The 32-year-old is already considering his future at Wolfsburg and he is set to be offered a route back to the Premier League by Sunderland. The Black Cats have been relatively quiet during the January transfer window, with O'Neill having taken his time to identify potential targets.

Addition

He feels Krygiakos could be a useful addition, with his vast experience and Premier League know-how making him an asset to any side. O'Neill is also keen to ensure that he is not left short on defensive options, with Wes Brown, Titus Bramble and Matthew Kilgallon all sidelined at present. Kyrgiakos is believed to already be in England and on his way to Wearside for transfer talks. Reports suggest he will move to the Stadium of Light on an initial loan deal.
