Video assistant referees (VAR) will be trialled during Brighton's FA Cup third-round tie against Crystal Palace, the FA has confirmed.
It will mean an additional referee being placed in a booth with access to every available camera angle. The VAR will then be able to advise the match officials of an error in the event of a match-changing situation.
The third-round meeting will be the first time VAR is used in a competitive club match in England.
The system is already in use in Serie A and the Bundesliga and was trailed for the first time in England during the November international friendlies against Germany and Brazil at Wembley, without being executed in play.
"The FA has always been open to trialling new innovations and was heavily involved in the advancement of goal-line technology before it was introduced," said the FA's director of professional game relations Andy Ambler.
"The trialling of the VAR system in this season's Emirates FA Cup from the third round is a continuation of that and further demonstrates that whilst being the most famous and historic domestic cup competition in the world it is also modern, progressive and innovative."
FIFA president Gianno Infantino has said he hopes VAR will be implemented for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, following successful trials at the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup and 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) have outlined that only match-changing incidents can be overturned by video review to correct clear errors and missed serious incidents. These include goals, penalty/no penalty calls, straight red cards and cases of mistaken identity.
VAR trials will also include January's League Cup semi-finals and are being led by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).
