Portugal v France: Paul Merson makes Euro 2016 final prediction

Paul Merson

We are down to two at Euro 2016 as Portugal take on France in the final and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson is back with one last prediction.

It has been a feast of football with 50 matches in the space of 30 days, and Merse has been with you every step of the way.

The Magic Man tipped hosts France to win the tournament before a ball was even kicked, however he doesn't see Didier Deschamps' side having things all their own way against the Portuguese.

But who does Merse see lifting the trophy in Paris on Sunday? Read on to find out...

Portugal v France - Sunday, 8pm

This is a difficult game to predict! It will be a very tight game and I can see it going all the way in Paris.

It's the first time in the whole tournament that a team will have a go at Portugal. So far, nearly all the teams they've played have sat back - even Croatia didn't really have a go at them.

France, backed by the crowd at the Stade de France, will be obliged to attack Fernando Santos' side and that could leave space for Cristiano Ronaldo and Co.

And with the trophy being on the line that will add pressure to the occasion for both sides, so that's why I don't think this game is a forgone conclusion.

In finals, you need your big players to perform so Portugal will be looking at Ronaldo and France will be hoping for even more from their man of the moment, Antoine Griezmann.

The Atletico Madrid man has been absolutely outstanding. What a player he is! I don't think he gets the credit he deserves at club level because he plays for Atletico. People just think they are boring and set up as a side that's hard to beat but he is top, top draw.

Ronaldo produced when it mattered for Portugal with that superb header against Wales - and what a header that was by the way. He had his doubters in the early stages of the tournament but he's proven on the big stage, and Portugal will be hoping he can fire once again when it matters.

I backed France before the tournament but I just don't see this match being as straightforward for them as everyone thinks.

It could be a long night in Paris with Portugal eventually edging it on penalties.

PAUL PREDICTS: Portugal 1-1 France in 90 minutes (5/1 with Sky Bet) - Portugal to win on penalties (9/1 with Sky Bet).
