World Cup 2018: Benjamin Mendy and Jesse Lingard among social media stars

We continue our World Cup 100 series with a look at 20 players who are social media stars.

While there will be plenty of players making an impact on the pitch, there will also be those stoking the fires, posting celebrations and trending on Twitter and Instagram.

So, who should you be adding to your social timeline?

From France's Benjamin Mendy to Colombia's Juan Cuadrado, read on for our selection.

Benjamin Mendy (France)

Despite missing the majority of his debut campaign with Manchester City due to a knee injury, the French defender made his presence known on social media, quickly becoming a fan favourite for his online antics.

He's already been weaving his charisma across the national team's official accounts as he treated the world to 'a day in the life of Benjamin Mendy'. Expect more of the same throughout the tournament.

The 23-year-old will look to put his knee problems behind him and force his way into France's starting XI in Russia.

Jesse Lingard (England)

The forward never shies away from an elaborate celebration, but it is his performances at Manchester United that have really captured the imagination.

The 25-year-old only scored his first England goal in March, but he is expected to play a major role this summer.

Maybe we'll be seeing the 'Shoot Dance' - as performed by Lingard and our very own Tubes below - when England lift the trophy in July? We can dream.

Paul Pogba (France)

Blue hair and reports of January offers saw the midfielder central to the Manchester derby in April, but he silenced the critics with a two-goal showing to delay Manchester City's march towards the Premier League title.

Following a tricky season for United, he will hope his performances do the talking for France.

And, he's not one for shying away from a mobile phone camera - as seen already by his social media use with the French team on their way to Russia. Should be fun to follow.

Gabriel Jesus (Brazil)

A picture of a bare-footed Jesus painting the streets of Brazil ahead of the 2014 World Cup went viral last year.

Four years later, the Manchester City striker is his nation's biggest goalscoring threat - quite the story for the former Palmeiras player. You can feel the pride he has representing his country through his social media page - he's a must follow for a look inside the Brazilian camp.

Gerard Pique (Spain)

After a league and cup double with Barcelona, the centre-back is targeting a second World Cup with Spain.

He could not quite convince Neymar to stay with the Catalan giants after all, but the pair could grace the same pitch once more if Spain come up against Brazil in this summer's final.

Alex Iwobi (Nigeria)

The Arsenal striker scored the goal that sent Nigeria to the World Cup, and netted in their warm-up defeat to England at Wembley.

The 22-year-old will now be hoping to fire his nation into the knockout stages at the World Cup wearing a kit that has taken social media by storm. A clear winner of our 'Rank the World Cup kits' feature, Iwobi's attire has already drawn plenty of 'kit-envy' from fellow pros, including Arsenal teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Marcelo (Brazil)

After tasting Champions League glory with Real Madrid for a third straight season, the full-back will now be hungry for international success with Brazil. Having played in the 7-1 defeat to Germany four years ago, the 30-year-old will be aware that revenge is only possible if both nations make the final.

Michy Batshuayi (Belgium)

After joining Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea in January, the striker found himself in familiar company once more when linking up with Eden Hazard on international duty. And after suffering an ankle injury towards the end of the season, the striker will be delighted to be fighting for contention in Russia.

Kyle Walker (England)

The right-back enjoyed a stellar campaign with Manchester City, featuring in the Premier League Team of the Year for a second straight season.

He may have missed the first phone call from Gareth Southgate, but there was never any doubt he would feature in the squad - whether he starts at full-back or centre-back, remains to be seen. What can you expect from Walker on social media? Honesty - that's for sure. As he wasn't shy to hide his true feelings about Leroy Sane's omission from the Germany squad.

Paulo Dybala (Argentina)

With a forward line to strike fear into any defence, Argentina will hope the prowess of Dybala, Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero finally end the country's 32-year wait to lift a third World Cup.

Kylian Mbappe (France)

One of seven teenagers heading to the World Cup, the 19-year-old is the second-youngest player in Russia, after Australia's Daniel Arzani. Following a title-winning campaign with Paris Saint-Germain, the striker will want to set the world alight in his first major international tournament.

Dele Alli (England)

From Fortnite celebrations to new clothing ranges, Alli will now turn his attentions to a first World Cup with England.

The Tottenham midfielder faces competition from Raheem Sterling, Jesse Lingard and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for a starting spot, but will be expected to have an influence when the group stages get under way.

Expect plenty of poses from the England starlet as he brings you the latest from Russia.

Thomas Muller (Germany)

With 10 World Cup goals to his name, the Bayern Munich forward has the all-time record in his sight. The defending champions are fancied to go all the way once more, giving Muller every chance of scoring six to match compatriot Miroslav Klose.

Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)

'Cool, calm and collected'. After scoring 27 goals in his opening season at Manchester United, the striker will hope to show such poise when leading Belgium's charge at the World Cup.

Tim Cahill (Australia)

Set for a fourth World Cup with Australia, the former Everton midfielder will be out to prove 38 is just a number when coming up against France, Denmark and Peru, as he strives to score a sixth World Cup goal, 12 years on from his first in Germany.

Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium)

Despite missing out on the individual awards this season, Kevin De Bruyne's campaign with Manchester City was one to remember. After inspiring his club to 100 Premier League points, he will look to steer a star-studded Belgium side to World Cup glory in Russia.

John Guidetti (Sweden)

A firm favourite in his native home, the Alaves striker will be hopeful of adding to his one international strike after forcing his way back into the reckoning.

Jerome Boateng (Germany)

The defender sparked fears he would miss the World Cup after sustaining a hamstring injury in April, but the Bayern Munich centre-back has fought back to fitness. His focus will now turn to featuring in a second consecutive World Cup final.

Shinji Kagawa (Japan)

After recovering from an ankle injury, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder will carry his nation's hopes going into this summer's World Cup. Japan have Poland, Colombia and Senegal for company in Group H - arguably the most difficult group to call this summer.

Juan Cuadrado (Colombia)

Having tasted domestic success with Juventus once more, the winger will look to assist Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez in Russia as Colombia look to build on their run to the quarters four years ago.
