New Zealand held Peru to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their World Cup intercontinental play-off in Wellington.

The All Whites got off to a nervy start with Peru looking more lively and enjoying greater possession than their opponents in the opening stages of the game.

Barely 10 minutes had passed when New Zealand's Stefan Marinovic was made to act quickly as confusion between the goalkeeper and his defence saw the ball edge towards the line.

Marinovic lunged towards the goal line to flick the loose ball away from danger.

New Zealand eventually looked more composed and had their turn to make Peru sweat as Ryan Thomas attacked in the penalty area - but the stalemate continued to half-time.

The PEC Zwolle midfielder again had another chance in the second half when a half volley in the penalty area came within inches of the post.

Burnley striker Chris Wood came off the bench to replace Clayton Lewis and immediately stood out, teaming up with Kosta Barbarouses for a low drive which fell wide of the goal.
