ALAVES JOIN CRUYFF CHASE

SPANISH side Alaves have become the latest side to be linked with a move for Jordi Cruyff, after the Dutch midfielder was released by Premiership champions Manchester United this summer.

Cruyff has been linked with a host of English clubs since parting company with United, but a move back to Spain, where he enjoyed success at Barcelona before moving to England, may well now tempt the 26-year-old.

Despite being unconvincing during his last return to Spain, when he went on loan to Celta Vigo during the 1998/99 season, Cruyff has still managed to attract the attention of a number of sides in Spain.

Alaves are looking to strengthen their squad in time for their Uefa Cup campaign next season, having finished in a club record 6th in the Liga last term, and Cruyff, who has been unable to establish himself at United, would provide them with some invaluable European experience.

"It's an option for us," said Alaves spokesman Juan Carlos Rodriguez. "He could be the player with cachet that the team needs. He has the quality."

According to his agent, Cruyff is set to make a decision on his future by Friday, and a number of teams throughout Europe will be waiting to hear where he chooses to ply his trade next season.
