York keeper trains with Toon

YORK CITY goalkeeper Russell Howarth has ventured to yet another Premiership team, with Newcastle United the latest club to cast their eye over the England Under-20 international.

The youngster saw a proposed move to Wolves fall through over the summer, prompting him to sign a rolling contract with The Minstermen.

York boss Terry Dolan said he would still allow Howarth to seek a move to a bigger club, and the Bootham Crescent outfit granted his request to train with The Magpies.

Howarth has previously trained with Everton, Spurs, Leeds and Sunderland, and his undoubted talent will surely secure a move in the near future.

The keeper spent two days with The Magpies, and Toon chief Sir Bobby Robson may invite him back when they return from their trip to Turin to face Juventus in the Champions League.

In other news, York chairman John Batchelor has confirmed that the club are close to bringing in a loan signing, reported to be a left-sided attacking player.

York`s fine start to the season has come off the rails in recent weeks, but Batchelor feels the potential new recruit could give their challenge a boost.

Batchelor said: "It is quite an exciting signing.

"It is not a mega-mega-deal but it should provide, should we complete the deal, a new opportunity as to the way we play."
