De la Pena makes Espanyol return
The 27-year-old midfielder looked set to leave Espanyol in the summer after his contract expired in June, but he could not find himself a suitable new home.
The former Barcelona star had a trial at Scottish giants Celtic earlier in the season, but did not do enough to win a permanent switch to Parkhead.
De la Pena revealed he was delighted to get his future sorted at last and get back to playing.
"I found the lay-off very difficult to cope with," said De La Pena.
"I'm keen to get back to playing again and help the side get back on its feet."
De la Pena's signing will provide a major boost for new Espanyol coach Luis Fernandez as he plots to help the side climb out of trouble in La Liga.
