Guayre in Villarreal U-turn
Antonio Guayre says that he stayed at Villarreal after being talked out of a move.
Antonio Guayre has revealed that he stayed at Villarreal after being talked out of a move during the January transfer window and is desperate to impress before the World Cup Finals. The former Las Palmas forward has not completed a full game this term for The Yellow Submarine and wanted to quit El Madrigal on the cheap last month, as his contract expires at the end of the current season.
Despite only having one appearance for Spain to his name, Guayre still harbours ambitions of forcing his way into Luis Aragones's squad in time for the World Cup in June.
"My first option is to stay at Villarreal, but I will have to see if the club really wants me and if they are going to play me," he said.
"They did not let me leave in January because they said that I was needed and, in truth, it has not been like that. The reality is I have not played very much at all.
"It was the same last year as well when I only played regularly in the Uefa Cup and this year, I have had to start from scratch, but I am slowly earning my place in the team.
"I do not want to cause problems or say that I feel cheated, but this year is a World Cup year and that is why I wanted to leave in January, to be able to show what I can do.
"That is the main reason why I weighed everything up because I want to be at a club where I can play regularly, but I trust Villarreal and that is why I agreed to stay.
"I enjoy living where I do and the players here are great, but every player wants to play and the ones that do not are not happy.
"Now, I am just hoping that the club offer me a new deal soon and this can all be sorted out."
Guayre joined Villarreal in the summer of 2001 after playing just one season in Las Palmas' first team and was a regular for The Yellow Submarines during his first three years at the club.
