United winger confident of winning Champions League

Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United are ready to win the UEFA Champions League again. United have not made it through to the final since beating Bayern Munich in 1999 but they were in superb form in the group stages before Christmas. Lyon stand between United and a place in the quarter-finals but Giggs is confident ahead of the first leg with the French champions on Wednesday. "It will be a tough game," Giggs said in the Daily Express. "Lyon have won the French title for the past six years in a row so they have plenty of experience in the Champions League. "The main thing is this season we're better prepared for Europe. Last year we were playing with really only 13 or 14 players because of injuries for the last few months of the season.

Fresh

"Hopefully this season we can go into the run-in with 20 players so the manager will be able to freshen things up. "If you think about teams such as Milan, Inter, Real Madrid and Barcelona, they have quality players that aren't even making the bench and that's what we must get to." Giggs has been particularly impressed by how United's summer signings have adapted to the Champions League. He praised: "The attitude and temperament of the players we've brought in - Owen Hargreaves, Carlos Tevez, Anderson and Nani - suit the continental game. "I don't think playing in the Champions League will faze them - it certainly hasn't so far. "Hopefully factors like that will help us fare better than we did last year."
