England midfielder happy to be in Euro squad

David Beckham has expressed his delight at being named in AC Milan's Uefa Cup squad. The England international, who is on loan with the Serie A giants from LA Galaxy during the MLS off-season, is due to return to his parent club on 9th March. He is now available for both legs of the round of 32 meeting with Werder Bremen on 18th and 26th of February. Midfielder Beckham is pleased to be involved, although admits it was a move which he was not expecting. Beckham told the Italian press: "I'm really happy about this, but especially surprised."

The decision has fuelled inevitable speculation that the former England international could stay beyond the end of his scheduled stint. Milan's chief officer Adriano Galliani accepts that they may lose Beckham's services in early March, but claims the decision to select him for Uefa Cup action was made due to his impressive performances to date. Galliani added: "We need to have the complete group at our disposal to face Werder Bremen, that is a vital game for us in the Uefa Cup. "As we are missing (Marco) Boriello, who is injured, we made this decision. But it is also because Beckham's performances are better than expected. "He is a player owned by LA Galaxy and it won't be easy keeping him with us. But at this moment he is an important player."
