Northampton must get something at Leeds on the final day of the season or hope results go their way if they are to avoid the drop after a 1-0 defeat by MK Dons.
A solitary goal from Aaron Wilbraham condemned Cobblers to the defeat which means they still need a point to guarantee their League One status.
MK Dons bossed the first half as Sam Baldock missed a sitter and then Jason Crowe cleared off the line from Mark Wright before Wilbraham got the only goal in the 34th minute turning home a cross from Jason Puncheon.
Luke Guttridge missed Northampton's best chance of the half while Baldock should have added a second for the visitors after the break but Chris Dunn saved well.
Northampton's late pressure almost paid off with Guttridge having a goal-bound shot blocked, Adam Watts heading wide and then having another effort cleared off the line by Luke Chadwick and Dunn went up for a late corner but headed over.
