Two late goals helped Everton move a step nearer the knockout stages of the Uefa Cup with a 2-0 victory in Nurnberg.

Late double secures Everton the points

Late goals from Mikel Arteta and Victor Anichebe ensured Everton moved a step nearer the knockout stages of the Uefa Cup with victory in Nurnberg. Arteta scored from the spot in the 82nd minute after 19-year-old substitute Anichebe had been bundled over in the box by Berti Glauber. And five minutes later, Anichebe showed great strength to hold off a challenge before slipping the ball through Jaromir Blazek's legs to earn the Blues a victory their domination deserved. Everton controlled the match from the first whistle and could have been in front inside the opening 20 seconds. Blazek first denied Arteta and then managed to turn Tim Cahill's follow-up against the post. Cahill also went close after 16 minutes but was unable to turn in Leon Osman's right-wing cross as Everton pushed for the opener.

Mistakes

Nurnberg had some good chances of their own Peer Kluge and Dominik Reinhardt both going close after Everton mistakes. Everton could have led at the break, but Ayegbeni Yakubu was unable to apply the finishing touch after a goalmouth scramble. Three minutes into the second half, Marek Mintal fired straight at Tim Howard as the German side pushed forward. But it proved to be the Bundesliga side's last serious shot on goal as the Toffees took control. With 15 minutes to go, David Moyes brought on Anichebe for Yakubu and the moved paid instant dividends as the striker latched on to Arteta's through ball before he was hauled down by Glauber.

Nerve

The Spaniard held his nerve to calmly beat Blazek with a shot to the top left corner. Anichebe then capped a great night for the Merseysiders when he stormed into the box from the right wing, evaded a challenge and beat Blazek with a low shot from a tight angle. The result leaves Everton on top of Group A with six points from their two games and virtually guarantees them a place in the knockout phase of the competition with two group games still to play.
