Latics thwarted by Colchester

Image: Williams: Kept U's attackers at bay

Colchester hung on for a goalless draw to frustrate Oldham in Saturday's League One clash at Boundary Park.

The home side enjoyed total dominance in the second half but they could not find a way past defiant U's keeper Ben Williams. Ruben Hazell headed just wide for Oldham early on and Dean Brill was the first keeper pressed into action as he denied Ashley Vincent. Anthony Wordsworth also went close for Colchester when he skipped past three challenges and drove off target but that was the end of their attacking threat. Oldham seized control as Chris Taylor saw a goal-bound effort deflected behind. Williams then saved well from Dale Stephens, who also drilled wide from 20 yards. Oldham substitute Dean Kelly had a goal ruled out for offside after 64 minutes and there was more frustration for the hosts when Williams beat out Oumare Tounkara's blast. Tounkara lashed a good chance over the bar and Taylor glanced too close to Williams from 10 yards. Fittingly, Williams had the final say as he preserved his clean sheet with another save from Stephens.
