Paderborn picked up a crucial three points in their battle to avoid relegation, denting Augsburg's hopes of playing in Europe next season with a 2-1 win at the Paderborn Arena.

Elias Kachunga gave Paderborn a lead which lasted less than five minutes before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg brought Augsburg level.

The hosts soon regained the lead, though, with Srdjan Lakic earning them all three points, even though they wasted some late chances to make the win more comfortable and prevent a nervy ending to the game.

For Augsburg, defeat could cost them their place in the top six when Hoffenheim travel to Cologne on Sunday.

They have won only one of their last nine league matches and need to turn the corner soon if they are to realise their dream of qualifying for the Europa League next season.

Paderborn's dream of a second straight season in the top flight is very much alive after a win which will give them confidence and also warn the other teams around them at the bottom of the table that they are serious about staying up.

It did not look like Paderborn were going to get anything more than another beating as Augsburg came at them early, although the visitors were unable to convert any of their chances inside a strong opening 15 minutes.

Florian Hartherz denied Augsburg's best chance with a goal-line clearance from Raul Bobadilla's effort.

Paderborn's first shot on goal came after half an hour with Kachunga's effort taking a deflection off Rahman Baba on its way over the crossbar.

Marvin Bakalorz then hit the crossbar with a volley as Paderborn recovered well after withstanding Augsburg's early pressure.

The hosts gained the lead three minutes into the second half with Kachunga heading Michael Heinloth's cross in for Paderborn's first goal in seven games.

Their joy was short-lived, though, with Hojbjerg's powerful shot bringing Augsburg level within five minutes, earning him his first goal since arriving at Augsburg during the winter break.

Augsburg moved into the ascendancy, but Paderborn hit back against the run of play to regain the lead on the hour mark with Lakic heading in Idir Ouali's cross.

Augsburg pushed for an equalising goal again, but the better chances went Paderborn's way with Ouali keen on adding his name to the scoresheet after setting one up.

Stefan Kutschke should have wrapped things up for the hosts, but he shot over a gaping goal before Ouali missed a one-on-one with Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz.

They did not prove to be costly misses, though, as Paderborn held on to a much-needed first win since mid-February and only a third win since the start of November.
