Crewe clinched a 1-0 win in the local derby at Port Vale courtesy of a controversial penalty.

Miller earns Crewe win through disputed spot-kick

Referee Chris Sarginson infuriated Port Vale by awarding a controversial penalty which settled a hard-fought local derby as Crewe clinched a 1-0 win. Vale skipper Gareth Owen appeared to take the ball when he challenged Clayton Donaldson but Sarginson pointed to the spot on the hour. Owen was booked and Crewe striker Shaun Miller made no mistake when he placed the ball to the left of Chris Martin while the Vale keeper dived in the opposite direction. Crewe played in their usual attractive style and Donaldson and Joel Grant caused the home defence some anxious moments in an entertaining first half. But Vale always threatened with their pace on the break and Craig Davies went closest to breaking the stalemate with a 20-yard volley which fizzed inches wide. Vale started the second half brightly as Danny O'Donnell denied Marc Richards six yards out, but the penalty award changed the course of the game. Miller and Donaldson both went close to adding to Crewe's advantage as Vale's play-off chances were dealt a serious blow.
