Miserable run continues for Addicks

Charlton Athletic head into the New Year without a win in 16 games after losing 3-1 at Sheffield United. The Championship's bottom club had taken a first-half lead through Hameur Bouazza only for Stephen Quinn to level on 65 minutes. Danny Webber then put the Blades in front and Quinn's second of the match wrapped up the points for the promotion hopefuls. Ian Bennett retained his place in goal for the Blades, prompting further speculation over the future of Paddy Kenny, who was left out of the starting line-up at Wolves on Boxing Day. Charlton trio Deon Burton, Matt Holland and Grant Basey all returned for the visitors. James Beattie headed wide and then shot straight at Addicks goalkeeper Robert Elliot, but it was Charlton who had the better chances. Bouazza pulled a shot wide from 12 yards and Burton fired an angled drive over the bar. Bennett then rescued the Blades in the 25th minute when he tipped away Nick Bailey's spectacular 30-yard effort at full stretch.

Fightback

Charlton took the lead when Bouazza latched on to Elliott's long clearance and drilled a low, left-footed shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area. Blades striker Webber fired over the crossbar soon after, but although the home side dominated possession up until the interval, Charlton held on to their advantage. After the break, Kyle Naughton twice went close with long-range shots and fellow defender Chris Morgan headed just wide as the Blades set about launching a fightback. Morgan saw another header held by Elliott and Naughton tried his luck again from outside the penalty area, but Basey did well to block. Blackwell sent on Sheffield-born striker Billy Sharp with half-an-hour to go and two minutes later the Blades equalised. Beattie laid the ball off inside the penalty area and Quinn rammed home a low angled shot into the corner. The Blades made their second-half dominance tell seven minutes later. Webber fired home only his second goal of the season at the second attempt after Elliott had parried his first close-range effort. Blackwell's side made sure of the points in the 79th minute when the industrious Quinn picked himself up after being fouled by Mark Hudson to slam home a 20-yard free-kick, left-footed into the top corner.
