Swansea's promotion hopes took a blow as they played out a goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

Chances few and far between in South Yorkshire

Swansea lost further ground in the Championship play-off race after being frustrated by a goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. Having started the day in ninth spot, five points off the top six, the Swans were unable to make up lost ground against the mid-table Owls, who created the better chances in an uninspiring game. Wednesday's new loan signing Luke Varney, on as a first-half substitute for an injured Sean McAllister, went closest to breaking the deadlock but his shot was well saved by Swans goalkeeper Dorus De Vries. De Vries also pulled off a stunning save in the 78th minute to keep out a header from Owls defender Richard Hinds. Hinds and Darren Potter returned to the Owls' starting line-up in place of Mark Beevers and Michael Gray respectively, while Federico Bessone, Leon Britton, Mark Gower and Jason Scotland were all back for Swansea.

Effort

Jordi Gomez blasted a shot from 35-yard attempt over the crossbar early on, while at the other end Wednesday winger Jermaine Johnson had an effort from the edge of the penalty area blocked by Garry Monk. Owls striker Marcus Tudgay then dragged his 12-yard shot wide in an opening 20 minutes devoid of any clear-cut chances. Swansea enjoyed greater share of possession during the first-half, but did not manage to seriously test Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant. McAllister was the forced out of the action in the 35th minute and Varney, who arrived from Derby yesterday, made his first appearance in a Wednesday shirt. Grant comfortably held another long-range shot from Gomez shortly before the interval.
Injury
Wednesday were rocked by another injury blow shortly after the restart when striker Francis Jeffers hobbled off to be replaced by Luke Boden. Swansea went in the 61st minute when Gomez's curling 25-yard free-kick was well saved by Grant and Potter flashed a left-footed shot well wide shortly afterwards. De Vries kept Swansea on level terms with a fine save to keep out Hinds' thumping header and then did well to hold Marcus Tudgay's shot as Wednesday created chances against the run of play. Johnson then flashed a shot over the crossbar from 20 yards and Tudgay headed wide in the closing stages as the home side briefly threatened to snatch all three points.
