Saints v Colchester preview

Lee Barnard returns for Southampton, while Liam Henderson will be added to the Colchester squad.

Barnard back for hosts; Henderson in contention for Us

Striker Lee Barnard returns for Nigel Adkins' first home game in charge of Southampton against Colchester. Barnard has completed a three-match ban for his sending-off against Swindon last month. He could go straight back into the starting line-up as Adkins attempts to pep up an attack which has yet to find the net since Alan Pardew was sacked four games ago. Defender Aaron Martin missed Wednesday night's 2-0 defeat by MK Dons with a back injury and will be checked over. Full-back Frazer Richardson (shoulder) and midfielder Adam Lallana (knee) are still on the sidelines. Radhi Jaidi, Ryan Dickson and Guly Do Prado could be involved if Adkins opts to make further changes while skipper Dean Hammond plays against his former club.

Colchester news

Liam Henderson will be added to the Colchester squad for the trip to the South Coast. The striker has joined on loan from Watford until January and will hope to make his debut at St Mary's. Boss John Ward will check on fellow frontmen Ian Henderson and Steven Gillespie. Henderson missed last weekend's draw with Plymouth after tweaking his knee in training while Gillespie played for the reserves in midweek as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury. Right-back Brian Wilson is also being monitored after suffering an ankle knock early on against Plymouth, with John White on standby to replace him. John-Joe O'Toole and Morten Knudsen (both knee) remain long-term absentees.
